Dear Clerkship Applicants,
Many of you have asked how to locate the addresses for recently nominated and confirmed judges.
Here are some suggestions:
1. http://www.law.umich.edu/currentstudents/careerservices/nomdb.htm (click on Sort by Confirmation or Sort By Nomination Date)
2. www.martindalehubble.com (do a name search to see if you can locate the individual's current or prior place of employment)
3. http://vls.law.vill.edu/Locator/fedcourt.html (Look on the specific court's website to see if the judge has a chambers address)
In addition to number one above, the following link may be helpful when attempting to locate the names of new confirmations: http://www.uscourts.gov/vacancies/confirmations.htm
Finally, the following links may be useful to you during your clerkship search:
http://www.infirmation.com/bboard/clubs-list.tcl. This is a very popular message board.
Type judges' names in the "Search" field and click go.
http://air.fjc.gov/history/judges_frm.html. This site allows you to search for judges based on selection criteria such as gender and ethnicity and the appointing President.

9/4/03 [All Clerkship Applicants] Request
Dear Clerkship Applicants,
As the clerkship season is upon us, please keep us posted if you accept an offer. Taking this step will save you from having to withdraw your application from each judge you applied to (though you would be well advised to drop them a note to that effect anyway; you should also always withdraw from judges with whom you have scheduled an interview); the Federal Law School Information System (FLCIS) provides a service to judges which lists the names and class years of students who have accepted offers, so that they know who is still available for interviews and who is not.
Once you accept an offer, fill out the below form and e-mail to fcc@law.columbia.edu, and your name will get added to FLCIS list (this is a private list only available to judges who must personally log into the system to view the Columbia list.) Finally, please be aware that while the 2nd Circuit and a few judges on the 9th, SDNY/EDNY are moving quickly, most judges have not yet called applicants for interviews.
Acceptance Form:
Name:
Class Year:
Court: (9th Circuit or SDNY)
Judge: (e.g. Jane Doe)
Clerk Term: (e.g. 2004-2005 or 2004-2005)

9/2/03 [All Clerkship Applicants] Interview Dossier
Dear Clerkship Applicants,
We are setting up a interview dossier, for information purposes only, to assist you with managing your clerkship interviews and applications. Please be advised that judges do not necessarily call all their interviewees at the same time. However, if you are called for an interview, we encourage you to contact the Faculty Clerkship Committee as soon as possible, at fcc@law.columbia.edu and complete the following form to the letter:
Date of Call for Interview: (e.g. 11/1/2003)
Date of Interview: (e.g. 11/12/2003)
Name of Court: (Circuit, District, or State, e.g. 11th or SDNY)
First and Last Name of Judge: (e.g. The Honorable Jane Smith)
This information will be kept strictly confidential. The public dossier will be updated often, and will ONLY include the information provided on the above form. (NO IDENTIFYING INFORMATION will be used in the dossier.)
We will post the names of judges, and the number of calls made/interviews set up, in the Judicial Clerkship Program Office in Little Warren 301.

8/28/03[All Clerkship Applicants] Judge Chertoff - IMPORTANT
1. The Administrative Office of the US Courts has Judge Chertoff listed as sitting in Philadelphia, this is incorrect. CLS has corrected that data in our database as follows:
The Honorable Michael Chertoff
United States Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit
Clarkson S. Fisher Judicial Complex
402 East State Street, Room 255
Trenton, NJ 08608
2. You should use this address to send Judge Chertoff clerkship letters after Sept 2. In addition, if you applied to Judge Chertoff, you do not need to notify your recommenders of this problem but you do need to e-mail Julie Schell(julie.schell@law.columbia.edu), following these very specific instructions:
Write Julie an e-mail where the subject line reflects as follows:
SUBJECT: [JUDGE CHERTOFF] YOUR NAME; LASTNAME OF CLS RECOMMENDER; LASTNAME OF CLS RECOMMENDER; LASTNAME OF CLS RECOMMENDER
Do not include the names of NON CLS recommenders.
This is an example: SUBJECT: [JUDGE CHERTOFF] John Smith; Dorf; Coffee;Witt
In the body of your email you must list the full name of your recommender and the full name of his or her faculty assistant.
John Smith
Michael Dorf (FA Gabriel Soto)
John Coffee (FA Mirna Fermin)
John Witt (FA Huy Chu)

8/13/2003 [All clerkship applicants] IMPORTANT database updates
Dear Clerkship Applicants, A number of important changes were made on the Judicial Clerkship Database today:
1. The Labels file on the Judicial Clerkship Database was affected by a virus. The file has been replaced, however, if you have already printed labels you should check to see if all of the Judges' names are displaying correctly. (This will only affect those of you who have already printed Labels, it does not affect your merge or letter file.) Note that you can always find the most up-to-date clerkship files on the Clerkship Downloads page accessible via www.law.columbia.edu/careers/clerkships
2. The following judges were removed from the database: Judge John Martin, SDNY, retired. Judge Robert Ward, SDNY, deceased.
3. The following new confirmations were added to the database: Judge Richard Wesley, 2d Circuit Judge Michael Chertoff, 3d Circuit

7/29/03 [all clerkship applicants] Updates
POSITION ANNOUNCEMENTS
We are receiving a number of questions regarding the number of announcements available on the Federal Law Clerk Information System (FLCIS) at https://lawclerks.ao.uscourts.gov/. Most federal judges do not post notices of clerkship openings. Clerkship applicants therefore typically send applications without regard to whether there is a posted opening in that judge's chambers. If you are applying in early September 2003, you should assume that the overwhelming majority of judges will have openings for the 2004-2005 term.
CLERKSHIP DATABASE
The Judicial Clerkship Database at http://wsgrax200tc.law.columbia.edu/Clerkships/ had a server error beginning last night. This problem has been fixed.
CLERKSHIP DOWNLOADS
We continue to receive questions about logging into the Clerkship Downloads page. The user name for this page is clerks and the password is gojudge. If you are accessing this page from a work computer, you may run into firewall issues because of your company's policies regarding restricted pages. Please try to access the Downloads page from home.

07/23/03 [All Clerkship Applicants] Important Updates
Dear Applicants,
Please read this e-mail in its entirety, it contains important details regarding your clerkship applications.
________________________________________________________________________
This is a reminder that in order to ensure the timely production of your faculty recommendations we encourage all applicants to provide their CLS faculty recommenders with mail merge files (please read the clerkship handbook located at www.law.columbia.edu/careers/clerkships under Clerkship Program Downloads for instructions) by August 1. If you plan to apply for clerkships in the fall, please notify Julie Schell (julie.schell@law.columbia.edu) of your plans by the same date. We strongly urge you to have your applications ready to send out on September 2, 2003, which under the Federal Law Clerk Hiring Plan is the first day applications, letters of reference, or phone calls may proceed.
We continue to monitor the Law Clerk Hiring Plan with our peer law schools. The moratorium on law clerk hiring is holding strong and please note that until September 2nd, solicitation of or participation in summer interviewing is considered in violation of the Plan. Details are available at http://www.cadc.uscourts.gov/lawclerk/. We will update you if any changes are made in the Plan.
DATABASE UPDATES: The Judicial Clerkship Database is now up-to-date with current clerk and judge information. Recently confirmed judges, however, may not be present because the Administrative Office (AO) of the United States Courts may not have updated their files (our database pulls judge data directly from the AO). If you plan to apply to recently confirmed judges who are not listed in our database, please contact Julie Schell (julie.schell@law.columbia.edu)with the name of the judge, confirmation date, and the accompanying court. Alumni might also check the nomination and confirmation websites available via http://www.law.columbia.edu/careers/clerkships, as new confirmations will likely be looking for clerks for the 2003-2004 term.
If you are having difficulty accessing the Judicial Clerkship Database
(http://wsgrax200tc.law.columbia.edu/Clerkships/), please read the instructions on the login page for your username and password. If you are still having trouble with the database, please contact the Office of Career Services (212-854-2683).
CLERKSHIP DOWNLOADS PAGE: Many students have reported difficulty accessing the clerkship downloads page. (http://www.law.columbia.edu/careers/clerkships--scroll down and click enter downloads). If you are attempting to access this page via your work computer, please try from home. Your company likely has a firewall up, preventing you from accessing the secure pages on the entire CLS website.
We also added a section on the Downloads Page titled E-mail Archives. On this page you can access all e-mails sent from the FCC to this list. (Available July 24, 2003.)
CONTACT INFO: If you have any questions, please contact the Judicial Clerkship Program Coordinator, Julie Schell, at julie.schell@law.columbia.edu or (212) 854-0721. Please note that beginning July 29, 2003 Julie's office will be located in WH301 (little Warren).
